The highlands of Ecuador

Boy with lama in the highlands of Ecuador
We made the best of our short stay in Ecuador by taking a highlands tour with a guide named Santiago.  He basically took us along the Pan-American Highway to several towns in the highland areas of Ecuador.  Even being from the "mile high" city, we could certainly feel the elevation which ranged around 3000M (9,800 ft).  A little interesting tidbit, we saw the only place where snow lies on the equator.  The snow capped Cayambe Volcano (18,996 ft) sits right on the equator.  We just had glimpse of the many volcanoes in the area because they were masked in clouds most of the day.Handmade beads in market

We had a great time walking around the little towns and visiting the markets including one of the most famous in South America, Otavalo.  This market was a maze of everything you can imagine being at a market and more. Otavalo MarketSpices at the market

On the way back to Quito we stopped by Tarjeta de Ingreso National park to see a breathtaking crater lake.A crater lake in Ecuadorian National Park

Mmmm. Delicious pig head. You have to try guinea pig when you are in Peru. The ear bones are the delicacy…

Take a picture of ourselves with your packs on and stuff so we can see how sweet all your travel gear is and how cool you look on your adventure. 🙂
