Sunrise from Dune 45, Namibia

View from Dune 45. Namibia The Namib-Naukluft National Park is in the center of the Namib Desert, which is thought to be the oldest desert on the planet.  We were up before sunrise to climb Dune 45.  This is a famous dune because it has an amazing view overlooking the Namib desert.  Our track up Dune 45. Namibia We trudged up the spine of the dune that was over 200 meters high.  Two steps forward, one step back.  We really try to avoid comparing places we've traveled to on this trip because everywhere should stand on its own, but it was hard not to compare this experience with the Sahara desert in Morocco.  We decided that both dunes are unforgettable.  The main difference is the Sahara dunes seem to be more densely packed together and not as high.  The Sossusvlei dunes are more sparse, but are massive, some reaching higher than 300 M.Tree at the base of Dune 45. Namibia We watched the sun rays stretch across the miles of flat surfaces up to the base of the sand dunes casting the knife edge shadows.  After watching the sun rise we had some fun and ran down the massive mounds of sand.  Leaping, skipping and rolling down was way better than the climb up.Self Portrait from the top of Dune 45, Namibia Beau running down the dunes
